Local partnersThe Regional Department of Agriculture is a branch of the Regional Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Mediterranean Fisheries. It manages public forests and protected natural areas in Sicily, a cover about 180,000 hectares of natural and managed forests and 33 natural areas that are located in the 3 largest Sicilian regional parks. This surface represents the largest part of forests in Sicily. In fact, according to the regional forest inventory there are about 500,000 hectares of woods, areas with natural vegetation, and pastures in Sicily. Silvicultural activities are mainly aimed to the ecological conversion of the forests from coppices to high stands to ensure higher stability.
The Department is formed by 9 provincial offices where 450 staff and about 21,000 forest workers are employed.
